7 skimmers compared

A solar pool skimmer does one job: it floats on the water and catches leaves, bugs and pollen before they sink. Most robotic pool skimmers sold here claim to do it around the clock. What separates them is what the box doesn’t say: who honours the warranty in Australia, how it charges after a week of cloud, and whether the basket is fine enough for what falls in your pool. Here are seven, compared on exactly that.

The short answer

For most pools, buy the Dolphin Skimmi 300. It carries 3 years from Maytronics Australia, charges from the sun or an optional charger, and has an edge-cleaning mode for the leaves that pile up along the coping.

Under gum trees or anything that drops a lot of leaves, the Beatbot iSkim has a 9-litre basket, up to 28 hours on a charge and also carries 3 years here.

If your problem is pollen, dust or a yellow film on the water, the Aiper EcoSurfer S2 has the finest filter here at 150μm.

Every figure above comes from the maker’s own Australian product page, Australian FAQ or Australian warranty terms, as published. Where a maker publishes nothing, the table says so. A smaller micron figure means a finer filter: 150μm catches pollen and dust that a 550μm mesh lets through. We don’t show prices, because they move and this page would be wrong within a month.

Two things worth knowing before you choose

The simpler Beatbot has the longer warranty. Beatbot’s own global warranty policy gives the iSkim 36 months in Australia and the better-equipped iSkim Ultra 24. Beatbot’s Australian store says the same: 3 years and 2 years. If you’re choosing between the two Beatbots, that’s worth more than a clarifier.

Solar only means solar only. Betta’s Australian store sells the SE, which charges from the sun and nothing else. Beatbot’s Australian FAQ says the iSkim’s adapter is sold separately. After a run of grey days in winter, or on a pool shaded by the house for half the afternoon, a skimmer with no plug-in option simply stops until the sun comes back.

The skimmers

BEST OVERALL

Dolphin Skimmi 300

  • 3 years Maytronics Australia
  • 4 cleaning modes
  • 6L filter

Maytronics make the Dolphin pool cleaners, and the Skimmi is their solar surface skimmer. It floats, drives itself around on two side paddle wheels, and pulls debris in with a front collection wheel. When the battery runs low it goes looking for the sunniest part of the pool to recharge.

What makes the 300 the pick is the combination. It has the longest Australian warranty here, 3 years, jointly with the Beatbot iSkim. It charges from its solar panel, with an optional external charger, so a wet week doesn’t strand it. And it has two things the Skimmi 200 lacks: an Edge Cleaning mode for the leaves that collect against the coping and in the corners, and Call-to-Edge, which brings it to the side from the Maytronics One app so you’re not reaching for the pool pole.

The modes are Edge-Free, Edge Cleaning, Leaf Catch and an Advanced Eco mode with three options. Maytronics give an ideal pool size of up to 20 metres, in rectangular, round, free-form and kidney shapes. The battery is lithium-ion.

The gap is in the numbers. Maytronics Australia publish a 6-litre filter for the 300, but no runtime per charge and no micron rating for the filter tray. So you can’t compare runtime or fineness against the Beatbot or the Aiper, and we won’t pretend otherwise.

Who it suits: a pool with trees nearby, and an owner who wants a 3-year warranty from Maytronics Australia.

Do not buy this if you want to compare runtimes before you buy. Maytronics don’t publish one for the Skimmi.
Pros
  • 3 years from Maytronics Australia
  • Solar, optional plug-in charger
  • Edge cleaning and call-to-edge from the app
Cons
  • No runtime published
  • No filter micron figure published

Australian warranty: 3 years · Maytronics Australia, as published on the product page

Beatbot iSkim solar robotic pool skimmer
HEAVY LEAF FALL

Beatbot iSkim

  • 9L basket
  • Up to 28 hrs per charge
  • 3 years warranty

Beatbot’s 2026 iSkim is the one to buy if leaves are the problem rather than dust. Its 9-litre basket is the biggest here, jointly with the iSkim Ultra, and the inlet is a wide 29 by 270mm. Beatbot publish up to 28 hours on a full charge with no sun at all, from a 10,000mAh battery and a 24W solar panel that chases the light when it runs low.

It cleans the surface on a random path with edge cleaning, rather than planning a route like the Ultra. It parks itself at the edge when it’s done, and the app runs over Wi-Fi on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz, or Bluetooth.

Two catches. The filter is rated up to 550μm, which Beatbot call 30 mesh. That’s coarse next to the 150μm Aiper and 200μm Betta, so fine pollen and dust will get through. And Beatbot’s Australian FAQ says the adapter is sold separately, even though the spec sheet quotes a 5-hour charge from a 64.4W adapter. Budget for one if your pool gets afternoon shade.

Who it suits: a pool under gums, a jacaranda or a liquidambar, where the basket fills with leaves, not film.

Do not buy this if your pool’s problem is pollen or fine dust. The 550μm filter is the coarsest published here.
Pros
  • 9L basket, the joint biggest here
  • Up to 28 hours with no sun
  • 3 years in Australia, longer than the Ultra
Cons
  • Coarsest filter published, up to 550μm
  • Adapter sold separately
  • Random path, no route planning

Aiper EcoSurfer S2 solar robotic pool skimmer
POLLEN AND FINE DUST

Aiper EcoSurfer S2

  • 150μm filter
  • 35 hrs per charge
  • 4L basket

The EcoSurfer S2 has the finest filter of the seven: 150μm, finer than the 200μm baskets on the Betta SE and Aiper’s own EcoSurfer S1. That’s the difference between catching leaves and catching the yellow pollen film that settles on a pool in spring. A leak-proof baffle Aiper call DebrisGuard stops what it has caught from floating back out.

Aiper’s Australian page quotes 35 hours of battery life and 24/7 running with solar top-ups. When it runs low it heads for sunlight for a quick charge, and it comes with a DC charger for the days that doesn’t work. It also carries a chlorine tablet dispenser that takes a standard 3-inch tablet, which nothing else here does.

The trade is the basket. At 4 litres it’s the joint smallest here with the Skimmi 200, less than half the Beatbots’ 9. Under a big tree in autumn you’ll be emptying it more often.

Who it suits: a pool that collects pollen, dust or insects more than leaves, or an owner who likes the idea of a floating chlorinator doing its rounds.

Do not buy this if you get heavy leaf fall. The 4L basket is the joint smallest here.
Pros
  • Finest filter here, 150μm
  • 35 hours, solar or charger
  • Built-in chlorine dispenser
Cons
  • Joint smallest basket, 4L
  • No route planning

Australian warranty: 24 months · Aiper Australia warranty table, listed as Surfer S2 / EcoSurfer S2

Dolphin Skimmi 200 solar robotic pool skimmer, front view
DOLPHIN, FEWER MODES

Dolphin Skimmi 200

  • 2 years Maytronics Australia
  • 3 cleaning modes
  • 4L filter

The Skimmi 200 is the smaller-capacity Skimmi, with a 4-litre filter against the 300’s 6, fewer modes and one year less cover. Like the 300, it charges from its solar panel, with an optional external charger, and Maytronics rate it for pools up to 20 metres. It weighs 4kg.

What it drops is the Edge Cleaning mode and Call-to-Edge retrieval. You get Edge-Free, Leaf Catch and Eco from the Maytronics One app. And the warranty is 2 years against the 300’s 3.

Before you choose it, compare the two prices on the day. If they’re close, the 300 is the better buy for the extra year alone.

Who it suits: a smaller, simpler pool where leaves don’t pile up along the edges.

Do not buy this if leaves collect along your coping and in the corners. That’s what the Skimmi 300’s edge mode is for.
Pros
  • 2 years from Maytronics Australia
  • Solar, optional plug-in charger
Cons
  • No edge-cleaning mode or call-to-edge
  • No runtime or filter micron figure published

Australian warranty: 2 years · Maytronics Australia, as published on the product page

Beatbot iSkim Ultra robotic pool skimmer
MOST FEATURES

Beatbot iSkim Ultra

  • 9L basket
  • 20 sensors
  • 7 motors

The iSkim Ultra is the most elaborate skimmer here. Instead of wandering, it plans an S-shaped route across the pool using 20 sensors, including three ultrasonic ones. Two spinning side brushes and a 265mm front roller sweep debris into a 9-litre basket, and it doses a clarifier into the water from a kit Beatbot say lasts up to a month.

It charges from a 24W solar panel or a magnetic wireless charger, from a 10,000mAh battery. Beatbot’s Australian pages don’t give a runtime for the Ultra. Its filter is rated down to 380μm, finer than the plain iSkim’s 550μm. The app works over 2.4GHz Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and it will call out its status by voice.

Read Beatbot’s footnotes before you buy. Full edge recognition needs the water at least 10cm below the pool edge, and Beatbot say infinity pools don’t allow the pool scanning and edge cleaning at all.

Then there’s the warranty. Beatbot give the Ultra 2 years in Australia and the simpler iSkim 3. Beatbot Australia sell a paid extension to 3, 4 or 5 years, bought within 30 days of the skimmer.

Who it suits: a large pool with regular leaf fall and cloudy water, where a planned route and a clarifier earn their keep.

Do not buy this if you have an infinity edge or a pool filled close to the coping. Beatbot say its edge cleaning needs the water 10cm below the edge.
Pros
  • Planned route with 20 sensors
  • 9L basket with side brushes
  • Built-in clarifier and magnetic charging
Cons
  • 2 years, shorter than the plain iSkim
  • No runtime published in Australia
  • No edge cleaning on infinity pools

Australian warranty: 2 years · Beatbot Australia, and 24 months in the Australia column of Beatbot’s global policy

WYBOT F1 solar robotic pool skimmer floating on a pool with leaves
BIG FINE BASKET

WYBOT F1

  • 7L basket
  • 180μm filter
  • 33W solar

On paper the F1 has the best basket here: 7 litres, nearly twice the Aiper’s, with a 180μm filter that’s close to it on fineness. WYBOT pair that with the biggest published solar panel of the seven, 33W, a 5,200mAh battery and about 6 hours to charge from the sun. A charger is in the box.

It has two modes. Standard runs for 8 hours straight. Smart runs for 24, in cycles of 10 minutes working and 10 minutes resting. WYBOT rate it for above-ground and in-ground pools of any shape, with an anti-stranding design to keep it off the steps.

What holds it back is the warranty: 1 year from WYBOT Australia, the shortest here alongside the Betta.

Who it suits: an owner who’s home most days and wants the most basket for fine debris.

Do not buy this if you want more than a year of cover.
Pros
  • 7L basket with a 180μm filter
  • 33W solar panel, charger included
  • Above-ground and in-ground
Cons
  • 1-year warranty
  • 8 hours of continuous running

Australian warranty: 1 year · WYBOT Australia, product page and refund policy

Betta SE solar robotic pool skimmer in white
SIMPLEST

Betta SE

  • 30+ hrs per charge
  • 200μm filter
  • No app

The Betta SE is the simplest thing here. Flick the switch, put it in the pool, and it runs. There’s no app. A small wireless remote switches between automatic and manual steering, and that’s it.

Betta publish 30-plus hours of cleaning on a charge and 5 to 6 hours to recharge in direct sun. The motors are twin salt-chlorine-tolerant units, the obstacle sensors are ultrasonic, and adjustable bumper rods keep it off shallow steps. The fine-mesh basket is 200μm, with a top handle so you can empty it at the edge.

The limit is charging. Betta’s Australian store sells the SE, and its own comparison lists the SE as solar-powered with no adapter. Betta’s adapter models appear on that comparison too, but the SE is the only skimmer the Australian store sells. So on a pool shaded by the house for much of the day, or after a week of rain, there’s nothing to do but wait.

The warranty is 1 year on Betta’s Australian store, and Betta’s extended cover plans are listed for the United States and Canada only.

Who it suits: a pool in full sun and an owner who wants no app, no schedule and nothing to set up.

Do not buy this if your pool is in shade for much of the day. The SE sold here charges from the sun and nothing else.
Pros
  • 30+ hours on a charge
  • No app or setup
  • Salt-chlorine-tolerant motors
Cons
  • Solar only, no way to plug in
  • 1-year warranty, no Australian extension
  • No basket volume published

Australian warranty: 1 year · Betta, as published on its Australian store

Warranty periods are what each manufacturer publishes for Australia. Australian Consumer Law guarantees apply on top of them and are not limited to these periods.

What to check before you buy a robotic pool skimmer

What falls in your pool. Leaves and pollen need different machines. Big leaves want a big basket and a wide mouth, which is the Beatbots. Pollen, dust and insects want a fine filter, which is the Aiper at 150μm, then the WYBOT at 180 and the Betta at 200. The Beatbot iSkim’s 550μm is built for leaves.

How much sun the pool gets. Every skimmer here runs on solar, and every one quotes its best figure in good sun. If the house or a fence shades the pool for half the afternoon, buy one you can also plug in: both Dolphins with Maytronics’ external charger, the Aiper, the WYBOT, or the iSkim Ultra on its magnetic charger. The Betta SE sold here has no plug-in option, and the iSkim’s adapter is an extra.

Where you’ll be when you check it. The Dolphins, the Beatbots, the Aiper and the WYBOT have apps, and the Betta has a remote and no app. If you want an app at all, rule out the Betta. If you want to check on it from work, ask the maker how its app connects before you buy.

Your skimmer box. Most in-ground pools here have a skimmer box set into the wall, and it pulls water towards it. A floating skimmer can end up parked in its mouth. If yours does this, ask the maker how they suggest keeping it clear of the skimmer box.

The water level and the edge. Beatbot want the water at least 10cm below the coping for the iSkim Ultra’s edge recognition, and say infinity pools can’t use its edge cleaning at all. If your pool is filled close to the brim, keep that in mind for any edge-cleaning claim.

Do you need a skimmer, or a pool cleaner that skims?

A robotic pool skimmer never touches the floor or the walls. If you don’t already have a pool cleaner, the skimmer is the second thing to buy, not the first: sunken leaves can stain, and a skimmer only reaches the ones that are still floating.

There is a middle path. A few pool cleaners also skim the surface, including the Beatbot AquaSense 2 Pro, the premium pick in our best robot pool cleaner guide. It’s one machine to buy, charge and lift out instead of two. If your pool is in open sun with nothing overhanging it, you may need neither a skimmer nor a skimming cleaner. Your pump and skimmer box will cope.

Buy the Australian unit

Each skimmer here is sold in Australia by the brand or its Australian distributor. That matters because warranty terms depend on where you bought. Beatbot’s global policy says warranty service is only available in the Beatbot service area where you bought the product, and WYBOT put the shipping cost of a claim on the buyer when an item has been taken out of its country of purchase. A skimmer bought from an overseas store may look identical and leave you without a route to a repair here.

Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law apply on top of any of these warranties, whatever the brand writes. Our robot warranty guide sets out Australian warranty terms brand by brand, pool robot makers included.

What we left out, and why

Betta SE Plus, Flex and Neo. All three appear on Betta’s comparison chart, and the SE Plus adds a charging adapter. But Betta’s Australian store sells only the SE, so there’s no Australian page to check the others against. If the SE Plus appears there, it fixes the SE’s biggest weakness.

Aiper EcoSurfer S1. Aiper’s Australian site lists the S1 alongside the S2, with a 5-litre, 200μm basket and up to 20 hours a charge. The S2 has the finer filter and the longer runtime, so it’s the Aiper we compare here.

Unbranded and marketplace skimmers. Search for a solar pool skimmer and you’ll find dozens with generic names. We only include skimmers with an Australian manufacturer page and a published Australian warranty. None of those did.

Pool cleaners that also skim. The Beatbot AquaSense 2 Pro and Sora 70 are covered in the pool cleaner guide, not here, because they’re floor cleaners first.

Questions people actually ask

Which robotic pool skimmer has the longest warranty in Australia?

The Dolphin Skimmi 300 and the Beatbot iSkim, both 3 years. Then the Aiper EcoSurfer S2 at 24 months, the Dolphin Skimmi 200 and Beatbot iSkim Ultra at 2 years, and the WYBOT F1 and Betta SE at 1 year. Beatbot Australia also sell a paid extension for the iSkim Ultra, up to 5 years. Every figure is from the brand’s Australian page or its warranty terms for Australia.

Are solar pool skimmers worth it?

If trees drop leaves, blossom or pollen into your pool, a skimmer catches them before they sink, stain and clog the pump basket. If your pool sits in open sun with nothing overhanging it, probably not: there’s little to catch, and your skimmer box will cope. Either way, a skimmer doesn’t replace a pool cleaner for the floor and walls.

Do robotic pool skimmers work on cloudy days?

On battery, for a while. Aiper quote 35 hours for the EcoSurfer S2, Betta 30+ for the SE and Beatbot up to 28 for the iSkim. After that, a solar-only skimmer stops until the sun returns. The Dolphin Skimmi 300 and 200, the Aiper, the WYBOT F1 and the iSkim Ultra can all be charged another way. The Betta SE sold in Australia can’t, and the Beatbot iSkim’s adapter is sold separately.

How long do solar pool skimmers last?

No brand here publishes an expected service life. The only commitment in writing is the warranty, which runs from 1 to 3 years in Australia depending on the skimmer. If lifespan worries you, buy the longest cover: the Dolphin Skimmi 300 or the Beatbot iSkim.

Does the Aiper EcoSurfer S2 catch pollen?

It has the finest filter of the seven here, 150μm, finer than the 200μm baskets on the Betta SE and Aiper’s EcoSurfer S1. That makes it the best fit here for pollen, though its 4L basket is the joint smallest.

Will a robotic pool skimmer get stuck in my pool’s skimmer box?

It can, because the skimmer box pulls water towards it. Check with the maker before you buy. Several, including the Aiper, the WYBOT F1 and the Betta SE, have anti-stranding designs or bumper rods for steps and shallow areas.

Can I control the Betta SE from my phone?

No. The Betta SE has a wireless remote and no app. The Dolphin Skimmis, the Beatbots, the Aiper and the WYBOT F1 all have apps; if you want to check on yours from work, ask the maker how its app connects before you buy.

Do robotic pool skimmers work in saltwater pools?

Several say so. Beatbot list salt-chlorine corrosion resistance for the iSkim, Aiper’s Australian page doesn’t mention salt for the EcoSurfer S2, and Betta fit the SE with twin salt-chlorine-tolerant motors. Maytronics Australia don’t mention salt on the Skimmi pages, so check with them if you run a salt pool.

Which robotic pool skimmer is best for an above-ground pool?

The WYBOT F1, the Beatbot iSkim, the iSkim Ultra and the Betta SE are all listed for above-ground and in-ground pools. Maytronics list pool shapes for the Skimmi but not above-ground use, so ask them before buying one for an above-ground pool.
