Automatic Litter Boxes

An automatic cat litter box clears the litter on its own after your cat leaves and seals the waste in a drawer, so you empty a bin every few days instead of scooping every day. Choose by three things: your cat's weight (most have a minimum and a maximum), the litter it takes, and whether your cat will use a hooded box.

Warranty is the maker's Australian term. Litter types are the ones each maker lists; Not stated means the maker doesn't say. Our automatic cat litter box guide covers smell, size and setting one up.

How to choose an automatic litter box

Start with your cat, not the box. Every maker sets a weight range, and some switch off automatic cleaning for kittens. A big cat can be over the top of the range on a smaller box, and a small or young cat can be under the bottom of it. The table above lists each maker's figures.

Then check the litter. Most of these boxes work with clumping clay, and only some list tofu or crystal litter. Our litter guide explains what each type does in a self-cleaning box.

Shape matters more than the spec sheet suggests. Some cats won't walk into a hooded box, so an open-top design is worth a look if yours is fussy. Measure the space too: these are bigger than a plain tray.

Questions people ask

Do automatic litter boxes really work?

They take over the daily scoop: the box clears the waste after your cat leaves and keeps it in a sealed drawer or bin. You still empty that drawer, top up the litter and wash the box out from time to time.

Can you use normal litter in an automatic litter box?

Most of these boxes take clumping clay litter, and some also list tofu or crystal litter. The table above shows which litter each maker lists. Our litter guide covers the differences.

Is an automatic litter box safe for kittens?

Check the maker's minimum cat weight in the table above. Most set one, and some switch off automatic cleaning for kittens. Where a maker publishes no minimum, the table says Not stated.

How often do you empty a self-cleaning litter box?

It depends on the size of the waste drawer and how many cats use it. The makers' own figures for the boxes we list run from about once a week to about every two weeks for one cat.

Which automatic cat litter box is best?

The one that fits your cat's weight, the litter you use and the space you have. Our automatic cat litter box guide compares six and says which cat and home each one suits.
