A cat water fountain is a bowl with a small pump or motor that keeps the water moving through a filter. Picking one is mostly about four things that are easy to miss on the box: whether it needs a powerpoint, how hard the pump is to clean, how often you’ll be buying filters, and who honours the warranty in Australia. This guide compares five fountains sold here on exactly that, using each maker’s own Australian page, and says which ones suit a dog.
For most homes, and for a cat and dog sharing the water, the PetSafe Drinkwell 360 Stainless Steel holds 3.8 litres and carries a two-year Australian warranty. If there’s no powerpoint where your cat drinks, the PETLIBRO Dockstream 2 Cordless runs on a battery and tracks how much your cat drinks in an app. PETLIBRO also sells a Plug-In style, so check which one you’re buying. For a big dog, the PetSafe Drinkwell 7.5 Litre is the one PetSafe says is great for big dogs.
Whatever you buy, check the filter. Every fountain here wants a new one every few weeks, by its maker’s own advice.
Our quick picks
PetSafe Drinkwell 360 Stainless Steel
3.8 litres of stainless steel, drinkable from any side. Two years of Australian warranty.
PETLIBRO Dockstream 2 Cordless
Battery fountain, up to 30 days a charge with one pet as published, and an app that tracks drinking.
PetSafe Drinkwell 7.5 Litre
The biggest here at 7.5 litres. PetSafe says it’s great for big dogs and multi-pet families.

Four things to check before you buy
A plug-in fountain runs from a powerpoint through a small adaptor, which means a cord running along the floor to the bowl. Cordless fountains run on a rechargeable battery, so they can go where your cat already drinks. The catch is charging. PETLIBRO quotes up to 30 days a charge for the Dockstream 2, and PETKIT quotes up to 83 days for the Eversweet Max. Both are the makers’ figures, and how long yours lasts depends on how much your pets drink and which flow mode you use.
A traditional fountain has a small pump sitting in the water, and that pump is the part that collects hair and slime and has to be pulled apart to clean. Two of the fountains here do away with it. PetSafe says the Outlast has no submersible pump and keeps its motor away from water and debris. PETLIBRO says the Dockstream 2 works without a traditional submerged pump. If cleaning is the job you dread, start there.
A fountain is only as clean as its filter. PETLIBRO suggests a new filter every two weeks for the Dockstream 2. PetSafe says every two to four weeks for its Drinkwell carbon filters, and the Drinkwell 360’s own filter page also says every two weeks. PETKIT suggests every four weeks for the Eversweet Max, though its filter page says a five-pack lasts 30 days. Every brand picked here lists replacement filters on its own Australian store, which matters more than it sounds: a fountain with no filters you can buy is a bowl with a pump in it.
Australian warranty terms differ a lot between these brands. PetSafe gives Drinkwell fountains two years through Radio Systems Australia. PETLIBRO lists fountains at 24 months, for products bought from retailers on its authorised list. PETKIT Australia gives 12 months, and 24 only on one fountain. PetSafe, PETLIBRO and PETKIT all tie their terms to where you bought it, so check the seller named on the listing before you pay. Many of the fountains in Australian search results carry no brand at all. Before buying one of those, ask who you would contact in Australia if it stopped working, and where you’d get filters.
Warranty periods are what each manufacturer publishes for Australia. Australian Consumer Law guarantees apply on top of them and are not limited to these periods.

The five fountains, one by one
Every figure below comes from the maker’s own Australian page unless the card says otherwise. Noise figures are the makers’ own and only appear where a maker publishes one.
This is the fountain to buy if two or three animals share the water and you want stainless steel. It’s an open stainless steel bowl you can drink from on any side, and PetSafe says it’s taller than some of its other fountains, which gives larger pets more room. You choose from five stream attachments, and the flow is adjustable.
It plugs in through a wall adaptor, and the pump sits in the water. PetSafe says the fountain goes in the top rack of the dishwasher and the pump gets hand washed. The charcoal filter, the foam filter and a replacement pump are all listed by part number on PetSafe’s Australian page.
Who it suits: a house with two cats, or a cat and a dog, with a powerpoint near the water bowl.
- Two-year Australian warranty on Drinkwell fountains
- Stainless steel bowl, drinkable from any side
- Filters and a replacement pump listed on PetSafe’s Australian store
- Plug-in only

No cord to the bowl, and a number for how much your cat drinks. The Dockstream 2 Cordless runs on a 5,200mAh battery that PETLIBRO quotes at up to 30 days a charge, and the PETLIBRO app tracks water intake and how often your cat drinks. PETLIBRO lists 2.4GHz and 5GHz connectivity. PETLIBRO says it doesn’t use a traditional submerged pump, and the tray is stainless steel. PETLIBRO also make a self-cleaning litter box with a camera, compared with five others in our best automatic cat litter box guide.
Two things to know. PETLIBRO says it tracks one pet at a time and is more suitable for single-cat households. And if you run two of these fountains, the app only combines their data with a Petlibro Care subscription; without one, each fountain tracks on its own. PETLIBRO doesn’t say which other features, if any, need the subscription.
Who it suits: one cat, a spot with no powerpoint, and an owner who wants to see how much the cat actually drinks.
- Cordless, so it goes where your cat drinks
- App tracking of drinking
- Lowest noise figure published here, 23 dB
- Stainless steel tray PETLIBRO says is dishwasher safe

- Warranty depends on where you bought it (see below)
Australian warranty: 24 months for fountains, for products from retailers on PETLIBRO’s authorised list · PETLIBRO Australia, as published. That list has no Australian entry, and the PETLIBRO-branded seller on the listing behind our button is not on it. If the warranty matters to you, ask PETLIBRO to confirm it covers your purchase before you buy.
The Eversweet Max runs on a battery, and PETKIT Australia quotes up to 83 days on a full charge. It also runs plugged in. The app connects over Bluetooth and sends low-water, low-battery and filter reminders. The tray is 304 stainless steel, and PETKIT says the wireless pump shuts itself off when the water runs low.
PETKIT suggests a new filter every four weeks, though the page for the Max’s filter unit on its Australian store says a five-pack lasts 30 days. The downside is cleaning: PETKIT says none of its parts are dishwasher safe.
Who it suits: a cat or a small dog, a spot away from a powerpoint, and an owner who would rather charge it every couple of months than every few weeks.
- Longest battery life published here
- Low-water, low-battery and filter alerts
- Filter unit sold on PETKIT Australia’s store
- 12 months of warranty, the shortest here alongside the Outlast’s one year

Taking the pump apart is the fiddliest part of cleaning most fountains, and the Outlast has no submersible pump. PetSafe says it has no submersible pump and keeps the motor protected from water and debris. The parts go in the top rack of the dishwasher, and an LED tells you when the water is low and when the filter is due. It takes PetSafe’s Ion-X filter, which PetSafe says lasts two to four weeks.
It’s small, at 1.7 litres, and plugs in with a USB cable and wall adaptor. PetSafe’s Australian page also lists a 3.7 litre size; the button here is for the 1.7.
Who it suits: one cat, and an owner who wants no pump to take apart and clean.
- No pump to take apart
- Top-rack dishwasher safe
- Low-water and filter LED
- Smallest here at 1.7 litres

This one is sized for dogs. PetSafe says the 7.5 litres is great for big dogs and multi-pet families, which makes it the only fountain here whose maker’s page says big dogs. It’s BPA-free plastic, the stream can be turned off for quieter running, and it takes PetSafe’s charcoal filter (PAC19-14088) and foam filter (PAC19-14089), both listed on its page.
It plugs in, the pump sits in the water, and PetSafe says the fountain is top-rack dishwasher safe with the pump washed by hand.
Who it suits: a labrador, a kelpie, or a house with several dogs and cats.
- Biggest capacity here
- Two-year Australian warranty on Drinkwell fountains
- Stream can be turned off

Questions people ask
What is the best cat water fountain in Australia?
For most homes, the PetSafe Drinkwell 360 Stainless Steel: 3.8 litres, stainless steel, and two years of Australian warranty. For a cat that drinks somewhere with no powerpoint, the PETLIBRO Dockstream 2 Cordless. If you’d rather not clean a pump, the PetSafe Outlast Pumpless, which has none.
Do vets recommend a water fountain for cats?
We aren’t vets, so ask yours. If your cat has a health condition, your vet is the right person to say whether a fountain will help.
Which water fountain suits a large dog?
The PetSafe Drinkwell 7.5 Litre. PetSafe says its 7.5 litre capacity is great for big dogs and multi-pet families. The makers describe the cordless fountains here as for cats and small dogs: PETKIT says the Eversweet Max suits cats and small breed dogs, and PETLIBRO says the Dockstream 2 suits small dogs.
How often should you change a cat water fountain filter?
Follow the maker. PETLIBRO suggests every two weeks for the Dockstream 2. PetSafe says every two to four weeks for its Drinkwell carbon filters and Ion-X filters (the Drinkwell 360’s own filter page says both every two weeks and every two to four weeks). PETKIT suggests every four weeks for the Eversweet Max, though its filter page says a five-pack lasts 30 days. PETLIBRO says to change the Dockstream 2 filter more often with more than one pet.
Is there a cat water fountain that doesn’t need a filter?
The PETKIT Eversweet Ultra With Camera doesn’t use one. PETKIT says the water never loops back (outside its SpringFlow mode) and runs into a separate waste tank, and the fountain uses a Cube C cartridge, replaced every 30 days, instead. When we looked, PETKIT Australia listed it as a pre-order.
How long does a cordless cat water fountain last on one charge?
It depends on the fountain and how much your pets drink. The makers’ own figures: up to 30 days for the PETLIBRO Dockstream 2 Cordless (PETLIBRO bases that on one pet in its sensor-activated flow mode) and up to 83 days for the PETKIT Eversweet Max.
Is a stainless steel cat water fountain better than plastic?
Three of the five fountains here use stainless steel for the bowl or tray, and PetSafe says the steel in the Drinkwell 360 is rust and tarnish resistant. Plastic fountains still work, and the biggest one here, the Drinkwell 7.5 Litre, is plastic. Whichever you choose, regular cleaning and filter changes matter more than the material.
Does PETLIBRO’s 24-month warranty cover a Dockstream 2 bought through our link?
PETLIBRO’s Australian policy lists fountains at 24 months for products from retailers on its authorised list, and that list has no Australian entry. The PETLIBRO-branded seller on the listing behind our button is not on it. Ask PETLIBRO to confirm before you rely on the 24 months. Your Australian Consumer Law rights apply either way.
Do you need an app for a pet water fountain?
No. PetSafe lists no app for either Drinkwell here, and they work as plain plug-in fountains. The app matters if you want alerts or drinking data: PETKIT’s Eversweet Max sends low-water, low-battery and filter reminders over Bluetooth, and PETLIBRO’s Dockstream 2 tracks how much one cat drinks.
