Figures are each maker’s published Australian specifications. “Dock holds” is the maker’s estimate of how long the dock goes between emptying, and a heavy shedder may fill it sooner. “Not claimed” means the maker’s Australian page doesn’t say the robot recognises pet waste, so don’t count on it. Warranty is each maker’s Australian policy; the conditions are in the pick cards. Where a button shows a price, it’s the store’s price at the time shown.
The picks
The T90 Omni is the all-rounder for a house with a dog or cat. ECOVACS’ ZeroTangle 4.0 main brush is built to stop hair winding round it, and the side brush has its own anti-tangle design. Its suction steps up when it reaches carpet, which is where shed hair beds in.
The dock empties the robot into a 2.5L bag that ECOVACS rate at up to 90 days, and washes and dries the roller mop. ECOVACS also list a pet care mode with pet-friendly zones, and say it gently avoids your pets.
Dreame say its DuoBrush handles hair up to 30cm long without tangling. That figure comes from Dreame’s own lab. TÜV SÜD certified a separate “100% anti-entanglement” claim, and Dreame don’t say at what hair length. If you live with a Border Collie, a Maine Coon or anything else that sheds long hair, it’s the one built for it.
It also recognises pet waste among the objects it avoids, along with food bowls and litter boxes, and has a boost mode aimed at scattered cat litter and kibble. The dock bag is 3.2L, which Dreame rate at up to 100 days. If you want to check on the dog from work, it can find your pet and take a photo, or make a video call through the robot.
Roborock tested its anti-tangle brushes with hair 20, 30 and 40cm long and report no tangling. That’s Roborock’s own test, not an independent one, but it’s the longest hair any maker here says it tried. At 79.8mm it’s also low enough for many of the beds and sofas where hair collects.
It recognises pets: when it comes up to one, it stops the main brush and steers round it rather than startling it. Roborock say it keeps strong suction on carpet up to 3cm deep, with the carpet setting on in the app. The dock goes up to 65 days between emptying.
A robot that drives through a mess spreads it across every room it cleans next. The 508 Combo recognises pet waste and steers round it, and iRobot back that with a promise: if it runs through solid dog or cat waste, they’ll replace it. The conditions are below.
It uses a rubber main brush rather than bristle. The dock empties the bin for up to 75 days and washes and heat-dries the mop pads.
Roborock give it 24 months in Australia, double the Edge 3 Pro’s 12, when you buy from an authorised seller. Its main brush and both side brushes carry SGS certificates for 0% tangling, though Roborock don’t give a hair length for those tests.
Like the Edge 3 Pro, it recognises puppies and kittens, stops its brush and moves aside. It has a camera for pet check-ins, which ships switched off. The dock goes up to 65 days between emptying.
Hair drifts under the furniture and stays there. At 81mm the T50 Omni gets under many beds and sofas, and ECOVACS cover the T50 family for 2 years in Australia. Its ZeroTangle 2.0 brush uses V-shaped bristles that ECOVACS say cut tangling to as little as 0%, and its suction rises on carpet.
The dock bag is 3L, the biggest ECOVACS bag here, though ECOVACS don’t say how many days that lasts.
The simple option. iRobot’s anti-hair-wrap brushes are built to resist pet hair tangles, and the dock empties the bin into a 2.5L sealed bag that iRobot rate at up to 3 months. The bag seals as you take it out, which is the bit you’ll appreciate with a shedding dog.
The mop is a single pad you wash yourself, and the robot keeps off carpet while it’s mopping.
If your pet has accidents
A robot that runs through dog poo before you get home is the story every pet owner has heard. Some robots recognise pet waste with a camera and steer round it: on this page, the Dreame X50 Ultra and the iRobot Roomba Plus 508 Combo. One brand backs that with a replacement promise.
iRobot will replace an eligible Roomba free of charge if it runs into solid dog or cat waste. The eligible list includes the Plus 508 Combo, Plus 505 Combo, Max 705 Combo and Max 708 Combo. It doesn’t include the Roomba 115 Combo.
The conditions: you buy it from iRobot or an authorised seller in Australia or New Zealand, and the pet waste avoidance setting has to be on in the iRobot app, or the promise is void. It runs for one year on a new robot and six months on a refurbished one, and you have to tell iRobot within 7 days. It doesn’t cover vomit, hairballs or anything that isn’t solid, or damage to your carpets or floors.
Robots that only “recognise pets” are a different thing. The Roborock picks stop their brush and move aside when they meet your dog or cat, which is about not frightening the animal, not about avoiding what it left behind.

What actually matters for pet hair
- The brush, before the suction. Hair wrapped round the brush stops a robot picking up properly, whatever its suction. Look for a named anti-tangle brush, and rubber over bristle if you have a choice.
- Who tested the hair claim. Dreame’s 30cm and Roborock’s 40cm are the makers’ own tests. They tell you what the brush is designed for, not how it does in your house.
- Carpet boost. Hair beds into carpet. Most picks here raise their suction on carpet, though Roborock’s need the setting turned on in the app.
- How long the dock lasts. Day figures are the makers’ own estimates, and Dreame and Roborock both say real results vary. A dog that sheds year round may fill it faster, so treat the figure as a ceiling.
- A camera, if you want one. Pet waste recognition and pet check-ins both need a camera. If that bothers you, the Curv 2 Flow ships with its camera functions switched off.
For heavy shedders, budget for replacement brushes and filters. Roborock’s warranty excludes brushes and filters as consumables, and ECOVACS also exclude consumables.
Is a robot vacuum worth it for pet hair?
Yes, for the daily layer. A robot that runs every day keeps hair from building up on hard floors and flat carpet, and that’s most of the battle in shedding season. It won’t do the stairs, the couch or the dog’s bed, and it won’t deep-clean thick carpet. Most pet owners keep a stick or upright vacuum for those and let the robot do the rest.
A note on iRobot’s ownership
iRobot filed for Chapter 11 in the United States in December 2025 and came out of it on 23 January 2026, wholly owned by Shenzhen-based Picea Robotics. It still trades as iRobot from Bedford, Massachusetts. In Australia, ChannelNews reported in June 2026 that Melbourne’s iXL Home distributes the brand, and iRobot’s Australian store and pet waste promise are running. We haven’t seen anything from iRobot about long-term parts supply here, so keep your receipt and buy from iRobot or an authorised seller.
