A robot that sticks itself to the glass and does the job for you is an appealing idea. The question is whether they work well enough to be worth the money. Short answer: yes, on flat glass, with a caveat about corners. This guide covers every window cleaning robot we could verify as genuinely available in Australia right now, what separates them, and which one suits which house.

Do window cleaning robots actually work?
On a flat pane, yes. The machine holds itself on by suction, maps the edges of the window, and works a planned path across the glass with a damp microfibre pad. On a normally dirty window it produces a result most people would call clean.
Two honest limitations, because they are what owners complain about most.
Corners and edges
A round or square robot cannot reach fully into a corner. Every model in this range has an edge mode that gets closer, but if you are the kind of person who notices a 10mm border you will still be finishing corners by hand. That is a physical limitation of the format, not a fault in any particular unit.
Heavy grime
These are maintenance machines. A window that has not been touched in two years, or one coated in salt spray or construction dust, needs a proper wash first. After that, a robot keeps it clean.
Upper-storey and fixed glass: the windows you either cannot reach safely or would otherwise pay someone to do. If all your glass is at ground level and easy to reach, a squeegee and ten minutes is honestly the better tool.

We would rather explain this than pretend it is a coincidence.
We checked the Australian market for window cleaning robots and applied the same rule we use across the site: the product has to be genuinely available here, sold by the brand or an established Australian seller, with local returns. On that test ECOVACS is effectively the whole category in Australia right now. Every unit below is sold and shipped by ECOVACS Robotics through their own Australian store.
The main alternative brand, HOBOT, is the one you will see recommended in overseas reviews. Its listings on Amazon Australia are currently through third-party resellers with very thin stock and prices well above what the same model sells for elsewhere, so we have not included any of them. There are also a number of unbranded units in the $100 to $250 range. Some may be fine, but we cannot verify who supports them or what happens when one fails, so they are not here either.

The four robots
The oldest model here and the one we would buy. It is the cheapest of the four and ECOVACS rate it at 5,300Pa, the highest suction figure in the range and higher than the W2 PRO Omni. It maps each window before it starts rather than working at random, handles frameless and floor-to-ceiling glass, and spots obstacles above 8mm. The safety specification is what matters on an upper storey and it is thorough: ten layers of protection, a safety rope, gravity sensors, and edge detection that reacts in two hundredths of a second. If the power cuts, it stays stuck to the glass for over 30 minutes.

The newest entry-level model, with a newer navigation generation than the W1S and five cleaning modes: deep, fast, precision, spot and edge. It finds the window edges first and plans a route from there. Our difficulty is what it costs. When we last checked it sat above the W1S, and ECOVACS do not publish a suction figure for it on the Australian listing, so we cannot tell you it matches the older model on the specification that matters most. Newer navigation is a real improvement, but not obviously worth a premium over a machine with a published 5,300Pa rating and ten documented safety layers.

The step up here is the station, and it is worth being clear that you are paying for handling rather than for a better clean. The robot works from an all-in-one dock instead of being carried and plugged in at every window, and the safety rope and the power cord are combined into a single cable — on an upper storey that is one less thing to manage over a sill and one less thing to snag. It sprays solution across the glass in a cross pattern and maps the window before planning its route. One number to check before assuming newer is better: ECOVACS rate this at 2,800Pa against the W1S’s 5,300Pa.

The flagship, and at this price it only makes sense for a particular kind of house: a lot of glass, much of it above ground level, where cleaning it yourself is unpleasant or genuinely unsafe. The difference from the W2 PRO Omni is that the station washes the pad itself — on every other model here you handle a dirty pad between windows. It runs the newest navigation generation in the range, a triple spray system, and ECOVACS list twelve levels of protection against ten on the W1S. If your windows are three storeys up, that last figure is the argument for buying the newest model rather than the cheapest.

What to look for
Safety layers, before anything else
If the robot will ever be on a window above the ground floor, this is the specification that matters. Look for a safety rope rated to the unit’s weight, battery backup that keeps it attached during a power cut, and edge detection. Every model here has all three. Not every unit on the market does.
Suction rating
Measured in pascals, the unit of pressure. Higher generally means better grip on wet or textured glass. Do not treat it as the only safety number, and do not ignore it either.
Mapped navigation, or random
Cheaper units move in a fixed pattern regardless of the window. A machine that maps scans the edges first and plans a route, which means fewer missed sections and less re-running. All four here map.
Whether you need a station
The honest test: count the windows you would actually clean in one session. Under about six, the handling you save is minor. Over that, it changes the job.
Cord length
All of these are mains-powered. There is no cordless window robot worth buying yet, because the safety systems need continuous power. Check the cord reaches from your nearest socket to your furthest window.

Frequently asked questions
Can they fall?
They are designed not to, and the protection is layered: suction, a safety rope anchored inside the room, gravity sensors, and battery backup so a power cut does not drop the unit. Attach the rope properly every time — it is the part that actually catches the robot, and it only works if it is anchored to something solid.
Do they work on frameless windows?
Yes. The W1S is specified for frameless, tilted and floor-to-ceiling glass. Mapped navigation matters more here, because there is no frame for the robot to feel its way around.
Do they clean the outside of the window?
Yes, from the inside. You place the robot on the outer face of the glass through an open window and it works the exterior surface while you stay indoors. That is the whole point of the category.
How long does one window take?
It depends on size and mode. A fast pass on a standard pane is a few minutes; a deep clean on a large pane is longer. It is not faster than doing it yourself by hand — it is that you are not the one doing it, and not the one on the ladder.
Do they need a special cleaning solution?
They use a small onboard reservoir. ECOVACS sell their own solution and generic equivalents exist. Do not use anything abrasive or heavily foaming.
Are the cheap ones on Amazon any good?
We cannot tell you, and that is the honest answer. There are units at $100 to $250 from sellers with no established Australian presence. Some may be perfectly serviceable. But this is a machine that hangs above your head and outside your window, and unlike a robot vacuum a failure is not just an inconvenience.
